How I chose my topic.
I considered all the topics in American history that I knew the least about that I could relate to the NHD theme Rights and Responsibilities. I thought about this for a long time. I came to the conclusion that I only knew about Martin Luther King, Jr. as a fighter for civil rights. That is when I decided to learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr. by doing a NHD project on him.
How I conducted my research.
I initially gathered my research by going to my school website and using the suggested sites for my topic. I did a lot of reading about Martin Luther King Jr’s (MLK) life and personal history using several online sources. I took a lot of notes. I also tried to utilize my school library. It didn’t have many books for my topic that would supply me with the right information, so my mom drove me to our city library. I found several books on Martin Luther King, Jr’s life and the civil rights movement. I checked out the books and spent several days reading them and gathering information by taking notes. Later I combined all my sources, both primary and secondary, to create my project.
How I selected my presentation category and how I created it.
I selected my category by choosing the best way that I would be able to tell my information with the most meaning. I was deciding between an exhibit and a documentary but I chose to do a website because I wanted to create something visual and interactive. I wanted the audience to hear in Martin Luther King Jr’s own words some of his most popular speeches including his “I have a dream” speech. I created my project by using weebly. A website allowed me to imbed his speeches with more ease than an exhibit. I chose separate tabs for each section of his life from childhood to death. I gave the most focus to the rights and responsibilities his efforts provided African Americans while highlighting how his crusade became a benefit to other oppressed groups. Lastly, I created an interactive questionnaire that would allow my reader the opportunity to reinforce the information I presented on the site.
How my project relates to the theme.
The NHD theme for this year is Rights and Responsibilities. My project relates to the NHD theme because Martin Luther King, Jr.’s personal crusade to change Black African American rights and responsibilities set in action a course that ultimately impacted the world. He brought to life the words of our constitution, “All men are created equal.” His fight for Black African American rights and responsibilities was only the beginning. Today many other oppressed groups including women, children and those with physical or mental disabilities can look back to Martin Luther King Jr. and his impact on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as the foundation of change for their own increased rights and responsibilities.
